Windows 7 and Microsoft Word allow you to insert symbols above letters without using ribbon commands. For example, work with a Windows PC keyboard to apply keyboard combinations that insert accented marks. Holding the 'Ctrl' key plus a punctuation key and the letter will insert the marked letter on your document. Diacritics include the acute, grave and circumflex accents. These keyboard shortcuts will help you display text more accurately in your business documents.

Open a document in Microsoft Word. Press “Ctrl' plus the apostrophe key and then the letter to insert an acute accent. Press “Ctrl' plus the grave accent key and then the letter to insert a grave accent.

Press “Ctrl-Shift” and the caret (' ^ ') key and then the letter to insert a circumflex accent.
3.
Press “Ctrl-Shift' and the tilde (' ~ ') key and then the letter to insert a tilde accent.
4.
Press “Ctrl-Shift' and the colon key and then the letter to insert an umlaut accent.
Tip
- Pressing the “Alt” key and a number code on your numeric keypad also inserts accented letters. For example, press and hold “Alt” and type “0193” on the numeric keypad to insert Á. Remember to enable the “NumLock” key on the numeric keypad.
